My last post I commented on Facebook statuses and the such and I am inspired yet again to blog...Now that is is November many FB users are doing their 30 days of thanks, and posting each day what they are thankful for. Day 1. I was thankful for the ability to read my babies to sleep every night. Day 2. I was thankful for my mom's perspective and strength and instilling it in me...and we will go from there because I think this is a point God wants us to see...Are the things that come against you a blessing or a burden...
Well obviously if something is against us it is a burden correct? But what if your perception is causing you to see blessings as burdens? Who would call a handi-capped child a blessing? Would you not say it is a burden to care for a 21 year old 90 pound infant? I grew up never even realizing that this was not "normal".
I was a 6 year old with a new born baby in the house! HELLOOOOOO! This is a wonderful thing to most little girls...but wait it gets better...my new born baby doesn't start crawling away from me or making messes of my toys, he never goes through the biting stage, and I never know tattling and sibling rivalry. I simply have the cutest new born baby brother who appears to be staying a new born baby. This is not a bad thing at all.
With no diagnosis the first years and even now weren't and aren't always easy. In the beginning there were extended times mom was away from home with hospital stays and surgeries. I stayed with Gram and Poppa or my Aunt and knew mom was taking care of little brother...Keep in mind I am being raised as an only child to this point and knew that when babies came mommies went to the hospital for a while...I had no idea this was completely out of the norm.
When life settled in and the doctor visits were fewer that was it. Life was settled and it was the 3 of us. Me and mom like always and now this little baby boy YAY! And life went on we functioned as a family and treated Jack as a new baby. Why didn't I realize not everyone had a family like ours?
My mother never grumbled, complained, or openly worried over Jack in front of me. She simply took care of what needed to be done and went about life as a single mother of 2. As time rolls on like it always does, new health concerns surface from time to time and each are handled in stride. Some worry us more than others but that is life, sometimes we worry.
At 27 I look back and realize my life was not normal nor was it always "easy" but I knew no different...At 27 I only realize this because there are times I have little compassion for people who post on FB like it is the end of their world because a child has a fever, the laundry didn't get done, or someone didn't like a comment they made...the list goes on...And although I feel horrible for my lack of compassion it is the awareness of it which led me to realize the impact of perception on our lives.
My mom looked and Jack all little and helpless and maybe not in the first moments she was with him, but somewhere along the line she decided what her perception of the situation would be. If you were to sit down with my mom right now and ask her how she does it I will bet the bank and all the money in it she would say "You can look at it 2 ways, it's a blessing or a burden" Praise God she chose blessing because I don't know what the last 21 years would have been like if she had chose burden...I don't know if we would have had 21 years and counting to know what it would be like...Jack may not have thrived had mom chose burden. But blessing isn't an easy choice...sleepless nights, howling in pain with no way to communicate where the discomfort is, back aches from transferring 90 lbs (of I'm not going to help you in the least because I'm spoiled rotten :) might I add!) The list goes on...but no one is keeping tally because it doesn't matter...perspective
