What's love got to do with it?
I feel it is only appropriate to address this issue after some of the "reports" and "articles" I have read lately due to the season. I use these terms lightly because I don't give much weight to Internet news.
I have read a number of troubling things this week. Most articles are subjects along the line of what men like in hair/clothes/attitude etc...7 quick fix beauty tricks, meaning of flowers, and best/worst Valentine's Days. Pretty standard...but the troubling part is they all come back to sex or evolution. Men like long thick hair and child bearing hips because of sex and evolution, after going home with a guy dash to the bathroom and clean up raccoon eyes by giving them a smokey morning after look, and endless lists of what men like none of which contain any character traits.
I could address each thing on it's own but I am not going to...not tonight anyway. We are sexual creatures and we are sexually drawn to each other, there is no doubt about that. Unfortunately the problem has been growing for decades. The problem being we are a sexually driven nation. Sex has left the bedroom of married (or very careful unmarried) couples and has introduced itself in public forums, entertainment, advertisement, business, education, groups, parties, even parades and awareness efforts...Wow...and do we still refer to this as "making love"?
My disdain this week comes from the "articles" with headlines containing "Love" and the associated picture being a sexually oriented one. When I think of the possibility of a husband someday and what our love will be and how an image could capture it, I imagine an older couple and the husband offering his arm to stable his wife as they walk, I see a wife bed side nursing her husband to health, I see a dad trying his best to get the kids off to school (so what if they don't match) just so his wife can sleep in after a sleepless night with the new baby. When I think of the love I want in my relationship I don't think of the sexual passion as a proper depiction of it. Now don't get me wrong....oh there will be ;) but that is not the love that is the profit sharing of love and marriage LOL! That is a good way to look at it...I am going to use that from now on...Profit sharing! Everyone loves a generous partnership!
ANYWHOOOOOOO...but to this image of what love is...Sex can give us a temporary high (or a huge let down...yikes!) but those chemicals and the closeness can give the impression of love or infatuation. But I am not going to talk about sex and all the good wonderful things it entails because again that is profit sharing...
No one goes into a career based on the profit sharing. You decide on a career based on stability, regular salary, room for growth, good moral and ethical standards, etc. I would not take a job that was random hours and no certainty of a sound future based on the fact that you get a minimum of $1000 a month in profit sharing. Yeah it is great for right now but what will I do when it runs out? Where is my future?
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love is...
Content in the home we have now, listening calmly and objectively, encouraging and gentle, respectful, and forgiving, Laying your life down for another
Love does not...
Compare you the "their" relationship, want "their" lavish life, brag, elaborate in an effort to make others feel bad or envious, through the past in your face, do one thing only to get something in return, get pulled into drama gossip or find joy in the hardships of others
Love always...
Trusts, looks toward a bright future, holds on through thick and thin
Love is when your husband comes into the nursery to rack the teething baby at 3am because you have been up for nights on end with a vomiting 4 year old and could not even say when your last hot shower was. Love is when through uncombed hair, baggy eyes, and disheveled night clothes your husband kisses your forehead and says "I love you beautiful"
Love is a wife sitting by her husband's bedside cleaning him and feeding him as he lives his last days here with her.
Love is a husband comforting his wife even though he doesn't see what the problem is.
Love is laughing together and enjoying each other after "parts" stopped working due to chemo treatments.
I could go on and on...
Love is so many things but love is not sex...Sex does not equal love. See, you can have sex with just about anyone that you find attractive but you can't have love with everyone. Most people are lucky to find it once let alone again after the loss of a spouse. Love is so much more than the minute of heated passion and it should never be reduced to such.
When sex is the profit sharing of a love partnership in the corporate world of marriage, you never have to worry about what you look like the next morning or wonder if "he" will call.
...Love sees deeper than the surface and commits for longer than the night.
