I Can Hold You Just A Short While

I can hold you just for a short while, while you're becoming who you're meant to be

so let me wrap you up in my arms filled with love and security

Let me look at your little fingers at the end of your little hands

and imagine how you will use them to fulfill the Lord's plan

I can hold you just a short while, while you fit so nicely in my lap

so I will hold you close even while you sleep and the world your dreams unwrap

I will kiss your sleepy little eyes and study the curves of your little face

and imagine all those you'll look upon and how you'll shine God's Grace

I can hold you just a short while, while you're little and learning to grow

so I'll do my best to show you the way, and teach you all I know

I will strive to be the person I long for you to be

and imagine how you'll lead and love your very own family

I can hold you just a short while, while you grow up big and strong

so let me share life's lessons and the principals of right and wrong

Let me watch your little feet as they grow steady, sure, and true

and imagine all the places they will one day carry you

I will hold you every chance I can until your own life you're ready to start

then you'll see I hold you still not in my lap but in my heart.
